Simple Speech Therapy Exercises for Home Practice

Speech therapy doesn't have to end when your child leaves the clinic. In fact, practicing at home can speed up progress — and make communication skills part of everyday life. With the right tools and encouragement, parents can be powerful partners in their child’s speech development.

Here are a few easy and effective speech therapy activities you can try at home.

Practice Speech Sounds Through Play

Turn sound practice into a game! Use toys, books, or flashcards to reinforce specific sounds your child is working on (like "s," "r," or "th"). For example:

  • Hide items around the house that start with your target sound

  • Play “I Spy” with sound-based clues

  • Use apps that encourage articulation with fun animations

Even five minutes a day makes a difference!

Build Language With Everyday Routines

Speech therapy isn’t just about sounds — it’s also about building language. You can help your child grow their vocabulary and sentence structure by:

  • Narrating daily tasks like cooking or getting ready for bed

  • Asking open-ended questions (e.g., “What should we do next?”)

  • Reading books and asking your child to describe what they see or predict what happens next

Tips for Parents

  • Be patient and give your child time to respond

  • Praise effort, not just accuracy

  • Repeat and expand on what your child says (e.g., Child: “Dog run!” You: “Yes! The dog is running fast!”)
