Articulation refers to the production of speech sounds through coordinated movements of the lips, tongue, jaw, and vocal cords. An articulation disorder is a speech disorder that occurs when specific sounds are mispronounced. This may involve slurred speech, substituting one sound for another, or an inability to produce certain sounds, resulting in unclear or indistinct speech.

Mispronunciation of words and sounds is common as children grow and learn new vocabulary. However, if these errors persist beyond a certain age, they may indicate a problem that requires attention. Early intervention is crucial, as common mispronunciations can often be corrected with the help of a speech therapist. Addressing these issues early not only improves speech clarity but also supports a child’s self-esteem and confidence when communicating while also improving communication skills later in adulthood.

Types of Articulation disorders

Below are examples of common articulation and phonological errors:

  • Substituting a “th” sound for an “s,” resulting in a distortion (e.g., saying “thun” instead of “sun”).

  • Replacing a “th” sound with a “d” (e.g., saying “dis” instead of “this”).

  • Substituting a “w” sound for an “r” (e.g., saying “wed” instead of “red”).

  • Omitting the final consonant of a word (e.g., saying “bo” instead of “boat”).

  • Replacing a final voiced consonant with a voiceless one (e.g., saying “ret” instead of “red”).

These errors can vary in severity and often require speech therapy to address.

Articulation Disorder therapy

At Speech Hub, we strive to make therapy enjoyable for children by incorporating engaging games and activities. Our interventions are designed to capture and maintain a child’s attention, such as games where they must correctly pronounce words to progress. Research shows that children thrive in environments that keep them engaged and motivated, making therapy both effective and fun.

We also prioritize convenience for families by bringing our services to you—whether at home, school, daycare, or even your workplace. Understanding the demands of busy schedules, we work closely with you to create a therapy plan that fits seamlessly into your routine while delivering the best possible care.
