Communication Disorder in children with ADHD

Students with ADHD often face challenges in speech and language development, which can impact their academic performance, social interactions, and overall communication skills. While not all children with ADHD have speech and language disorders, many experience difficulties such as delayed language processing, poor articulation, or trouble organizing thoughts into coherent sentences. These challenges can make it harder for them to follow instructions, participate in discussions, or express themselves clearly.

Difficulties may include:

  • Difficulty accurately or fully comprehending information.

  • Poor recall of instructions and directions.

  • Tendency to speak in phrases rather than complete sentences.

  • Disjointed storytelling with a lack of coherence.

  • Difficulty recalling specific words during conversations.

  • Challenges understanding figurative language and ambiguous expressions.

  • Language difficulties that impact reading and writing skills.

  • Social communication issues, such as missing verbal and non-verbal cues or interrupting others.

  • Struggles with understanding complex academic information, especially in subjects like science and English.

To identify communication challenges associated with ADHD, our speech-language pathologists begin with a thorough assessment. Once completed, therapy is tailored to the child's needs, incorporating a variety of strategies and techniques. Collaboration with the school and parents plays a critical role in the process. School-based recommendations may include having teachers repeat instructions, confirm the student’s understanding, rephrase information in a more concrete manner, and provide varying levels of cues or support based on the child’s specific needs.

Early identification and targeted intervention are crucial in supporting students with ADHD. Speech-language therapy can help address these challenges by improving language processing, articulation, and social communication skills. Collaborative efforts involving teachers, parents, and therapists ensure consistent support across academic and home environments, helping students develop the skills they need to succeed.
